For the next stage, I wanted to produce some drawings to both detail my proposals, and to get an idea of what the building would look like.
I didn't do technical drawing at school, and my art teacher despaired, so I turned to a computer aided design program that was recommended to me called (rather cheesily I think) Dream House Designer by Data Becker (click here for a link to the Data Becker website). This program allowed a computer model of a building to be built floor by floor by assembling walls, floors, windows, doors and the roof of specified dimensions, textures and designs. The model extended to the outside, allowing an approximation of the immediate surroundings of the garden. Using this information, the computer could build three dimensional images from any position inside or outside the building, with rendered surfaces and ray tracing to simulate shadow in sunlight. This route was not without effort and required detailed measurements of the dimensions of the existing house and exact positions of windows etc. This information had then to be used to build the computer model.
This done, I could then experiment by adding different designs for the extension and generating images of the results. The pictures show the computer generated images for the original house.
